Make Cat Skiing More Fun and Less Risky

Cat skiing involves fun as well as a certain degree of risk. You try to avoid hazards and accidents but they may still occur. Powder Cowboy Cat-skiing takes the safety of their guests and staff very seriously. In order to make your cat skiing experience as free from injuries as possible we at Powder Cowboy Cat-skiing follow the strict standards and guidelines of HeliCat Canada.

  • Expert drivers and certified mechanics are hired.
  • Training sessions including beacon search for all guests prior to every tour are conducted. All guides that lead guest groups are trained and certified by the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides.
  • Local weather is monitored and recorded twice daily, and the information is incorporated in morning and afternoon guide's meetings and decision making.
  • Staff and guides undergo a pre-season training program. Guides take part in regular and detailed refresher courses and continuing education sessions.
  • Being the members of HeliCat Canada ( British Columbia Heli-Ski and Snowcat Operators Association), safety operation systems and policies are reviewed on a regular basis. Powder Cowboy Cat-skiing is a professional member of the Canadian Avalanche Association.
  • Continuous changes in the weather, snow conditions and avalanche hazard throughout each ski day are monitored and the safety program is adjusted accordingly.

Cat skiing Training Schedules for Guests

It is expected that you will not endanger yourself or your fellow guests while cat skiing. You will be taught about some of the risks so that you can limit your exposure to dangerous areas and conditions.

Primarily this means always listening to and following the instructions of your guides. Guests participate in a safety briefing from their guides and Snowcat operators. They undergo training in transceiver use and search techniques as well as a safety briefing on cat skiing procedures and proper behavior and precautions to be taken in and around the Snowcat machines. Each guide carries a pack including avalanche safety and rescue equipment, as well as first aid kits.
